Miss America Mentions Self-Defense: Some folks lose their minds…

I found it more than a little interesting that she has the exact same opinion (for colleges) that we (DT4EMS) have found within the medical community.

Emergency Departments in particular are a very dangerous place for staff. The Emergency Nurses seriouslyAssociation (ENA) has outed this dirty little secret stating 50% of ED nurses have been assaulted on the job yet very little attention is given to this fact.

The National Association of EMTs (NAEMT) found 52% of EMS providers assaulted on the job.

Dr. Brian Maguire found the rate of EMS assaults to be  22X that of other private sector industries.

In trying to educate not only staff but administrators as well regarding reasonable response to violence in the medical community, we find a lack of acknowledgement of the problem is the biggest hurdle.

Miss USA Nia Sanchez is a fourth-degree black belt in taekwondo and says women should be able to defend themselves as a way to battle the problem of campus rape.

Simply hiding under the covers and imagining the monster does not exist…does not keep the monster from “getting you”.

Bless you Miss America for standing up for victims of violence. We feel your pain of ridicule from those who wish to keep it a dirty little secret.
